"Extensions of the Tradition Concert"
The "Extensions of the Tradition" concert series was inaugurated in 1988 at the University of Michigan with the purpose of presenting works by composers of the African diaspora to the general public. Since 1993 the series has been presented at IU by the African American Arts Institute in collaboration with the Jacobs School of Music and the Archives of African American Music and Culture.
This year's concert will exclusively be chamber works. The program will feature the diversity, range, and depth of various composers from the Americas and Europe. The pieces collectively range in many different styles and periods of music from the classical repertoire. The concert repertoire will span from the late Romantic Period to the Modern styles used today. Listeners will be given a wide variety of perspectives of the black composer and how life around them affected the music they have created.
