“Connectedness,” the subject of this year’s Themester, is not a modern idea. Connections between ancient states and peoples were remarkably extensive, and they were fostered by vast trade networks. While the primary focus of these networks centered firmly on economic prosperity, an additional benefit was the exchange of artistic ideas and techniques.
