Radovan Dermisek, Indiana University, "A Tale of Scales"

In particle physics, fundamental forces are associated with characteristic energy scales. There is the QCD scale associated with strong interactions, the Planck scale associated with gravity, and the electroweak scale, or the Fermi scale, associated with electroweak interactions. These scales have different origins and, in the case of the electroweak interactions, the origin remains unknown. The recent observation of the Higgs boson and a lack of observations of new particles at the Large Hadron Collider, so far, make the origin of the electroweak scale even more mysterious. The resolution of this puzzle might be revolutionary, perhaps even changing our view on what is an acceptable physical theory. I will review few approaches to understanding the origin of the electroweak scale and discuss some of my recent work motivated by this mystery.
