E-Waste Recycling (general public)
The fifth annual IU South Bend E-Waste Recycling Fest will be Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, in the parking lot at the corner of Vine Street and S. 20th Street.
All electronics, such as computer systems, computer accessories and televisions, will be recycled free of charge.
May 10 (Friday) is for businesses and organizations and May 11 (Saturday) is for the general public. Friday drop off times are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Business and organizations should register by visiting http:// indiana.poweron.com/p/register/.
The general public can bring their items anytime between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. The general public does not need to register. For the entire list of recyclable items being accepted, please visit https://www.iusb.edu/csfuture/ewaste.php or http://southbend.indiana.poweron.com.
The event is being organized by the Center for a Sustainable Future, and recycling services are being provided by Apple, Inc. All items collected are kept secure until delivered to the shredder where they are ground up into small piece and sorted into their material streams, which are then sent back into the manufacturing stream. There is no need to erase or remove any hard drives as the data is irretrievable as it is destroyed in the shredding process.
This year everyone making a drop off will receive a card enabling them to sign up for a free energy audit and $35 worth of compact fluorescent light bulbs and low flow faucet aerators and shower heads.
