Say it Straight Workshop

Say It Straight is a communication and assertiveness skills training designed to transform disempowering communications/behaviors into empowering communications/behaviors. The training involves a number of tools including: -“Body Sculpting”: body sculpting involves positioning our bodies in certain structures so as to illustrate how we feel on the inside when we communicate in an empowering way (e.g. “saying it straight”) as well as in disempowering ways (e.g. “placating”, “bullying/blaming”, “passive aggressive”, “super-reasonable”, “irrelevant”). These body sculptures help us to pick up on physiological cues that, if we can recognize, we will be able to take more control in how we act and feel. -“Movies”: conducting movies and role plays is a way for Say It Straight attendees to practice utilizing various communication/assertiveness skills and how we feel as we articulate how we feel and what we want in stressful and high-risk situations. -“Imagery”: much of Say It Straight involves attendees undergoing different guided imagery sessions. The purpose of which is for attendees to imagine themselves in certain situations and then assess how they feel (both physically and psychologically) as they are in these situations. Say It Straight is an evidence based practice listed on SAMHSA’s NREPP website. It is one of 3 evidence based programs that the Community Capacity for Prevention and Education (CCPE) substance use and HIV prevention grant is implementing in Monroe County. Those in attendance for this training will learn how the training is conducted, as well as information about how to become a Say It Straight trainer, which involves working with Say It Straight Master Trainer, Matthew Clay. Join us on Friday, December 1st at 1pm in room ED 3017. RSVP encouraged via Career Connections Online.
