What is IUPUC Dance Marathon?
IUPUC Dance Marathon is a fundraiser that benefits the kids at Riley Hospital for Children. Students at IUPUC spend the year leading up to the event raising money and securing sponsorships. The actual dance marathon is a six hour event to celebrate the previous year of fundraising. Don’t worry; it’s not six straight hours of dancing! Other games and activities will take place for those who may have two left feet.
This year's Dance Marathon will feature Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie band, a DJ, and Riley families.
IU’s history of dance marathons began in 1991 at Bloomington. One student who was friends with Ryan White wanted to honor him by raising funds to donate to the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center to benefit the children of Riley Hospital.
Much like IU-Bloomington, IUPUC’s Dance Marathon began with one student seeking to change the lives of children at Riley Hospital and carry on a strong IU tradition. That passion quickly spread to other students and so began IUPUC Dance Marathon
2011 Dance Marathon
The 2011 IUPUC Dance Marathon was the first event of its kind at the Columbus campus. A committee of less than 10 students worked tirelessly over the school year between classes by planning events and recruiting dancers to raise over $3500!!!!
The Dance Marathon hosted an array of activities for dancers. The night began with a heartwarming performance from Abigail Johnson, a “Riley kid.” Students were engaged in dance lessons from local dance instructors, took photos with their friends in a photo booth, played “Minute to Win It” games, and of course enjoyed snacks and refreshments to keep their energy going.
In keeping the reason for the celebration in mind, parents, patients, and friends of Riley kids shared their stories with the dancers. When dancers were feeling tired they could visit the inspiration tent which displayed pictures and stories of Riley kids from across the state.
The evening ended with a reveal of the total dollar amount raised. Everyone who attended was very proud of their achievements as they raised well over their initial goal of $2500!
Our vision is to engage IUPUC students and the community in one of the most valuable life changing experiences they will encounter!
$25,000 to be split among 2 programs at Riley Hospital for Children
