Description: On October 7-8, 2010 the IL/IN East Asia National Resource Center Consortium will hold the final event of the STIP (Science and Technology in the Pacific Century) project, funded by its 2006-10 Title VI grant. The conference will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will focus on East Asian biomedical science and technology, with an emphasis on transnational collaboration and competition. Charis Thompson (Gender and Women’s Studies; Rhetoric; Co-Director, Science, Technology, and Society Center, University of California, Berkeley), a leading scholar in the fields of reproductive technologies, bioethics, genomics, and stem cell research, will deliver the keynote address. Other confirmed speakers include Joan Fujimura (Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison), a specialist in biomedicine and genomics, including genomics in Japan, and Nancy Chen (Anthropology, University of California, Santa Cruz), who has conducted extensive research on traditional, psychiatric, and biomedical healing practices in China.
